How to Use Essential Oils to Combat Aging

In the quest for youthful skin, many resort to drastic measures such as Botox or facelifts, perhaps without realizing there are more natural (and less expensive!) ways to treat and protect aging skin and help restore a fresh faced glow without going under the knife. One of these ways is by using essential oils. Essential oils are natural plant essences that are taken directly from the plant, herb, tree, root or resin. There are thousands of essential oils, each with special benefits and properties. Many essential oils are excellent for mature skin, including carrot seed, neroli, palmarosa, patchouli and rose otto. But how do you use these to nourish your skin? The easiest way is to purchase high quality skin care products that include these essential oils and go about your everyday skin care routine.  This ensures you’re getting the benefits of these oils without any additional steps or expense. Another method is facial massage. To do this, add just a few drops of your chosen essential oil(s) to a carrier oil selected for your skin type.  Place a few drops of the carrier oil + essential oil blend onto your fingertips and gently massage into the skin in a circular motion. Always remember to massage in an upward and outward motion. Apply gentle pressure to the temples, across the forehead and from the sides of the nose out towards the cheeks. Facial steams using essential oils are a great way to open up the pores and detoxify the skin. Steaming also assists in the removal of dead skin cells and helps to moisturize the skin....

Natural Alternatives to Botox

No one wants to look older than they are, in fact, many will resort to extreme measures such as Botox to appear younger. This doesn’t have to be the answer though. There are natural alternatives to Botox. Botox is a popular cosmetic treatment to reduce the visible signs of aging. Botulinum toxin type A is injected into the areas around the eyes and between the eyebrows to minimize frown lines and crows feet. It temporarily paralyzes the muscles into which it is injected by intercepting the messages the brain sends to those muscles. This stops the muscles from reacting to messages from the brain and keeps that area wrinkle free for a period of time. This is a temporary fix, as repeat treatments are needed every 3-6 months. Many are hesitant to have injections into their face, especially with a live toxin like botulism, and so seek out natural alternatives to Botox that can provide similar results. Here are a few ingredient options to look for in your skin care products that can help firm, tighten and tone your skin without the injections or toxin. It will take longer to see results, but many find that trade off to be worth it. Hyaluronic acid – Hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring in human tissue. When applied to the skin, hyaluronic acid creates a breathable, protective layer on the skin that retains moisture, boosting the elasticity and hydration levels of the skin. This creates a firmer, plump appearance to the skin. It is unique in that it can hold more than 1000 ml of water per gram of hyaluronic acid,...

Showing Signs of Saggy Drooping Skin?

One of the biggest signs of aging is saggy, drooping skin. It is a natural part of the aging process, but it is one that can be quite distressing and often leads people to consider cosmetic surgery to correct the sagging skin. It can, however, be fairly easy to help ward off this natural sign of aging, just by exercising the face and neck for a few short minutes on a daily basis.  Follow a basic facial muscle exercise program and it can help keep the facial muscles taut and toned. Of course, this is not foolproof, but can certainly help keep the signs of aging at bay. Complete these facial exercises in addition to using quality anti-aging skin care products each day. Sit upright with your eyes open. Pull the eyebrows and facial muscles up and back. It should have the affect of pulling your ears back as well. Hold to the count of five and then slowly release.  Repeat this move ten times. Sit upright looking straight ahead with your eyes open. Look up as far as you can without moving your head. Then look down, all while keeping your head still. Repeat ten times. Sit upright and lean your head back until you’re looking at the ceiling. Keep your shoulders and head relaxed. Pucker your lips as much as you can, as though you’re trying to kiss the ceiling. Hold for 5 seconds, then bring your lips back into the widest smile you can make. Hold this for 5 seconds. Relax, then bring your head back into an upright position. Repeat 5 times. Finally, a...

So Why Should I Care About Antioxidants?

The Right Mix of Antioxidants Will Make a Difference For You You will see in all sorts of cosmetics literature this abut antioxidants, and that about free radicals yet they are not about demonstrations that might have occurred in the 60’s, they are about our bodies, and more importantly our skin. So what is this science all about and why should we be so interested?   When a piece of fruit goes brown or discolored, this is oxidizing. It occurs when substances are exposed to the air, or more specifically oxygen.  When steel is exposed to the air, it can rust.  How much faster it rust if we add some salt air to the mix.  to a similar extent this is what happens when we are surrounded by polluted air,  like in any city where there are is traffic, smog and the like. It is a natural process and the addition of oxygen causes a chemical reaction that results in change.  In the case of the fruit, it goes brown, in the case of a piece of steel it turns orange and in the case of our skin it gets dry and brittle. Cells will come and go as part of the process of life, and whilst oxidizing is a continuous and natural process, some of our cells get damaged in the process and here is where the damage begins.  These few cells may form free radicals.  the freedom part of the description refers to a missing molecule, that then lets these cells bond with another molecule in order to essentially recover their missing molecule.  The problem with free...

What Are the Five Best Tips From Dr OZ To Combat Anti-Aging?

Just in Case You Have Missed This We came across this video just today from Dr Oz and have summarized its main tips here for our readers. Manage Hypertension Do Not Smoke Choose a Diet That You Love A Sensible Exercise Plan Stress Management Program You are able to see the video here which will take you to YouTube. Dr Oz On Anti-Aging In this video, he is passionate about adding brightly colored fruits and vegetables to the diet but does not overly stress greens which we believe to be a necessary ingredient in all diets. He also reveals the superfoods – broccoli and omega 3. In addition to the living right approach, which of course we fully endorse,  there are three  factors which we think need extra attention and they are drinking plenty of water,  using paraben free sunscreens, and a good skin moisturizing regime.  Parabens are used by some cosmetics manufacturers as a preservative.  Whilst they maintain the product’s integrity, and the FDA has declared them to be safe, there are studies that suggest this is not the case. Our view?  There will always be controversy, however looking at the EWG SkinCare database there is some doubts about the safety of parabens, hence our suggestion to avoid if possible. GirlHamed Saber / Foter / CC BY Just like the components of a good moisturizing product, for example,  any approaches to anti-aging it appears to us are not that different from any other stage of life.  There is no perfect one size fits all solution, rather the approach is to be found in a range of strategies, and approaches.  There...
